Fish should never be placed in a newly installed aquarium. In fact, time must be allowed for the necessary bacteria for the nitrogen cycle to develop properly. This takes about three to four weeks.

However, it is possible to introduce cultures of microorganisms taken from aquariums that are already ecologically balanced. Fish can then be added immediately as the aquarium is instantly mature.

The appearance of algae in the aquarium is generally a sign of an imbalance in the water. It could be a case of poor water quality, insufficient or excessive lighting, poor water renewal or even an overpopulated aquarium.

25% of the water should be renewed approximately every 15 days; the lighting should be of quality for 8 to 12 hours a day. The aquarium should not be placed in direct light, and there should not be too many fish relative to the water volume.

A happy fish is above all a healthy fish and one that lives in a perfectly adapted aquarium. It is important to monitor any new behavior or sign appearing on the fish. The eyes are clear, the fish eats regularly and swims actively even if some species are shyer. There should be no white spots, growths, or torn body parts…

To be happy, a fish needs enough space, an environment where it can hide and develop, real plants, an effective filtration system and of course food.

On average, under good conditions, with appropriate swimming space and good quality water, a goldfish can easily live between 15 and 20 years. This lifespan also depends on the variety of goldfish. The further the fish is from its original form, that of the common Asian carp, the shorter its lifespan.

A goldfish needs at least 50 liters of water but some species require 100 liters of water per individual. This is an important factor for its longevity as well as the quality of food, the water filtration system, lighting, presence of other individuals...

If you go away for a short week, it is entirely possible to fast the fish if they have been correctly fed beforehand. If you are going for a longer period or if this solution does not suit you, there are automatic feeders available. It is important to test their operation before leaving. 

You must ensure that the aquarium is well aerated. Lighting can be managed through a timer. If it's very hot, the aquarium can be equipped with a fan to lower the surface water temperature. A slightly larger water change will be done before leaving.
