Where to place the dog kennel in the garden?

Even if your dog's kennel is weather-resistant, it should be protected as much as possible. It can be placed under a tree (but it won't be protected in winter), under a roof overhang, or on a patio. It shouldn't be too far from the house while being sheltered from drafts.

Ideally, the dog kennel should be in the sun in winter and in the shade in summer. This is possible with a model of kennel that is easy to move. If the garden borders a busy road, avoid placing the kennel right next to it. Your dog will be calmer away from this road and will be less likely to bark. In any case, it is important to insulate the kennel from the ground.

What size dog kennel?

The dog kennel should be neither too large nor too small. Kennels are available in sizes S, M, L, XL, or XXL depending on the size of your dog.

To avoid mistakes, measure your dog's length from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. The length of the kennel should be 1.2 times the length of the dog.

For the height, measure your dog from the top of the shoulder to the ground. Again, multiply by 1.2 to get the correct kennel height. As for the opening, it should be 0.9 times the shoulder-to-ground height.

In any case, your dog should be able to lie down in its kennel, easily slip in while being protected from the weather or heat.

What is the price of a dog kennel?

There are dog kennel models for all budgets. A plastic or PVC kennel costs between 50 and 200 euros; a resin kennel costs between 80 and 500 euros. The price of a portable model ranges from 20 to 200 euros; a wooden kennel with a terrace and PVC roof can exceed 300 euros.

An XXL dog kennel will inevitably be more expensive than a model for a small dog. The price of a luxury kennel varies from 90 euros, like the API Zolia flat roof and collapsible wooden kennel, to over 300 euros like the Zolia Maui wooden kennel with terrace and PVC roof.

How to insulate a dog kennel?

A wooden kennel will be easier to insulate than a plastic or resin kennel. The dog kennel should not be placed directly on the ground but elevated 15 to 20 cm. The floor should be thick enough.

For better insulation, you can add a polystyrene sheet at least 4 cm thick covered with a wooden board. A large blanket will complete the insulation of the bottom of the kennel.

Same principle for the walls: a polystyrene sheet is sufficient. The roof must be perfectly waterproof. Bitumen shingles are very effective. The opening can be equipped with an insulating curtain that's easy to pass through.
