Frequently Asked Questions: Parrot Cage
What cage for an African Grey parrot?
The African Grey parrot reaches at adulthood an average size of 35 centimeters, which can rise to 42 cm for the most remarkable males. This bird therefore needs a large cage. For a single specimen, a minimum cage height of 160 cm should be planned. The length should be 100 cm and the width 77 cm.
These dimensions are minimums that guarantee the African Grey parrot a basic living space. They can therefore be exceeded. The cage should be compartmentalized into several spaces and levels.
How to set up my parrot's cage?
The setup of a parrot's cage must meet its different needs: food, rest, entertainment. It is advised to plan several dedicated areas for its needs. They can be sectioned off, well identified by levels, platforms. The food area should be equipped with stainless steel bowls, feeders, drinkers.
For your parrot's rest, it is necessary to acquire one or two perches placed at different points in the cage, sufficiently distant so that they do not obstruct the parrot's movement.
To entertain your bird, you can add sound toys, ladders, a swing, and even a mirror, as some parrots have the ability to recognize themselves in a mirror.
Depending on your intentions, an outdoor space can be designed if you want your bird to be able to leave its cage. This area can be located on top of the cage and accessible from the top floor of the cage.
What to put at the bottom of a parrot’s cage?
The bottom of the parrot's cage is intended to collect the bird's droppings and urine. Ideally, it should be filled with bird cage litter. This will absorb urine and odors, limit humidity in the cage and in the room, and prevent contact with your parrot's feet.
The most suitable litters are made of sand, gravel, or corn cob. They should be changed once or twice a week.
How to clean my parrot's cage?
To clean your parrot's cage, simply remove the removable bottom on most of our models. Then empty it of litter and clean it thoroughly with cleaning products. The feeders and all accessories must also be thoroughly washed. This cleaning should be done twice a week.
Regarding the entire cage, your bird must be removed from its cage to perform a full wash of the bars with a brush. This cleaning is necessary once a month.
Should you let your parrot out of its cage?
It is advisable to regularly let your parrot out of its cage, provided the outing is secure. Outside its cage, your bird will have more space and will be able to spread its wings more easily. Your bird will enjoy a special contact with you.
Proceed gradually and in stages when acquiring your parrot. Gradually accustom your parrot to the room where its cage is located, increasing the durations if the attempts are successful. Purchasing a freestanding perch can facilitate its outings.
