Frequently Asked Questions about: Rabbit Cage
Rabbit Cage: What are the right dimensions?
Your rabbit's cage should be as large as possible! The right dimensions are those that allow the cage to fit in one of your rooms and ensure sufficient space for your rabbit. It must be able to feel comfortable, jump, and move around freely.
In general, this type of cage for rodents should measure at least one meter long by 60 cm wide and the same in height. Ideally, you should let your rabbit out for several hours a day so it can really stretch its legs.
Where should I place my rabbit's cage?
The cage should be placed in a quiet area, away from drafts, in a room that is neither too hot nor too cold. Your rabbit should be able to enjoy what's happening around it, but avoid high-traffic areas like a hallway or entrance.
It will appreciate being placed in a living room but may be sensitive to noise. Also, avoid the kitchen as rabbits have a highly developed sense of smell and some odors may be bothersome.
How to clean the rabbit cage?
To clean your rabbit's cage, start by letting it go for a hop outside. If it's not used to it, place it in its transport box or in a closed, secure area. Remove the accessories and discard the entire bedding.
To thoroughly clean the cage, use hot water and baking soda. Scrub with a brush or let it sit for about thirty minutes. Empty the mixture and rinse with clear water. Dry before adding clean bedding.
Remember to clean the bars, toys, and other accessories with a water/baking soda mixture. The bulk of dirt and waste should be removed with a scoop every day.
What to put in the bottom of my rabbit's cage?
Vegetable or paper/cellulose bedding is a good solution, as is hemp bedding. Straw is a reliable choice. It is comfortable, and rabbits like to nibble on it. Of course, choose high-quality straw, soft enough yet firm.
It is sometimes advised to put carpet at the bottom of the cage. This can be difficult to clean if your rabbit forgets itself outside of its bedding. Also, be careful it doesn't eat it.
Why does a rabbit gnaw its cage at night?
It may gnaw its cage out of boredom. This can be the case if it stays permanently in its cage. It may also show its frustration at not being able to get out when everyone is asleep. Perhaps you've given it the habit of gnawing its bars.
If you arrive each time it gnaws its cage, it quickly understands that it's a way to get you to come. But it also means it wants to get out. It may gnaw its cage if it lives in a stressful environment. An unneutered rabbit can release its frustration by gnawing on whatever is within reach, including its cage bars.
