Frequently Asked Questions About: Cat Food
How to store cat food?
Unopened cans of cat food should be stored in a cool, dry place. They should not be kept below 10° C and should definitely not freeze.
Once the can or pouch of food is opened, it must be stored in the refrigerator, between 4 and 7° C. The container should be sealed with a lid, a clip, or placed in an airtight box. This prevents the food from drying out and limits odors.
The food should be consumed within 48 hours. When the food is served to the cat, any uneaten portions after four hours should be discarded.
How much cat food per day?
The daily amount of cat food depends on the age, weight, lifestyle of your cat, as well as its specific needs. This wet food satisfies more quickly than kibble.
For a cat between 2 and 4 kg, which doesn't have particular health issues, you should count between 150 and 250 grams of food per day. For a cat of 4 to 6 kg, the portion can range from 240 to 350 grams per day.
If the cat also eats kibble, this amount of food should be reduced. It is advisable to check the manufacturer's packaging and to adjust the portion for each animal.
Kibble or cat food?
Kibble is more convenient on a daily basis. It doesn't dry out, doesn't emit odors, and its nutritional quality is often superior to that of wet food. The latter is more challenging to manage because it should not stay at room temperature for more than four hours.
Wet food contains 75 to 80% water; therefore, it is necessary to give a larger quantity than kibble. Kibble helps clean teeth, but wet foods are more appealing.
If your cat is difficult to feed, wet food is a solution. It can be given occasionally, as a "festive meal."
Mixing both allows for optimal bi-nutrition: kibble for oral health and wet food for perfect hydration of the cat that doesn't drink much.
How to make homemade cat food?
To make balanced homemade cat food, use cuts or scraps of meat, well-cooked rice flakes, unsalted vegetables, canola oil, and brewer's yeast.
Simply cook the rice flakes until they form a paste, add the cooked vegetables, previously seared meat pieces, and a small spoonful of brewer's yeast.
Once the mixture has cooled, it is placed in jars and can be kept for several days in the refrigerator. Your veterinarian or our top chefs at Zoomalia will give you excellent advice for preparing a balanced homemade diet for your cat.
Which cat food for allergic cats?
It all depends on the cat's allergy. There are grain-free foods, foods for sterilized or sensitive cats like Quality Sens HFG, 100% natural broth foods with six recipes to choose from.
Many brands offer hypoallergenic cat foods such as Ziwi Peak, Purina One, Almo Nature, for example.
